Project
Kvadrat textiles have been chosen for the Standard, a recently renovated Art Deco building in Copenhagen, which overlooks the city’s harbour. The fabrics are used in two separate restaurants and a jazz club.
The Standard is a venture by Danish ‘gastronomic entrepreneur’ Claus Meyer and famed jazz musician Niels Lan Doky. The building was originally designed by acclaimed Danish architect Kristoffer Nyrop Varming when the likes of George Gershwin and Cole Porter were composing music to ‘timeless standards’.
Offering ‘new wine in old bottles’, the Standard respects the tradition of the original building while reinventing it. For instance, the music played at the jazz club combines older jazz with cutting-edge unknown jazz.
The Verandah restaurant, designed by Danish-Italian design team GamFratesi, serves contemporary pan-Indian cuisine and draws its inspiration from 1930’s Indian verandas. Reflecting this, the interior concept is a play on ‘indoor versus outdoor’. For instance, the inside part of the restaurant features fragrant trees.
The jazz club is also designed by GamFratesi. It offers intimate jazz performances featuring top-rated local, regional and international jazz artists. These share characteristics with theatre productions to take visitors on a unique type of ‘musical journey’.
Studio is a restaurant where ex-Noma chef, and co-owner, Torsten Vildgaard serves gastronomic New Nordic cuisine. It has a Michelin Star and is decorated by the design team Christina Meyer Bengtson and Ulrik Nordentoft. Christina Meyer Bengtson and Ulrik Nordentoft also designed the Almanak restaurant. This seats up to 100 people and offers modern Danish cuisine made from local, seasonal produce.
Solution
The chairs in the jazz club are upholstered with Remix. At the Verandah restaurant all the dining chairs, sofas and cushions are upholstered with Canvas, Hallingdal and Remix while the curtains are made from Time. Inside the Almanak restaurant Remix is used on custom-made benches.
‘We are very familiar in using Kvadrat textiles, the collection represents a combination of high quality material, sophisticated textures and great colours. Inspired by a combination of colonial Indian style and Nordic environment, we have selected several fabrics, playing with a delicate combination of grey, blue and few addition of orange,’ GamFratesi
