Theatre of dreams

A dynamically lit home theatre in Beijing features a colourful constellation of Kvadrat textiles. The space, created by Peng Wenhui in collaboration with acoustic designer Qiao Zhenyu, embodies two complementary approaches: "design for seeing" and "design for hearing."

The acoustically optimised space is built on an oval-shaped floor plan. It integrates a curved inner wall within a curved outer wall divided by a passage. Selected wall panels on the walls are upholstered in Revive. Together with the soft lighting, they evoke the outdoor experiences of sunsets, afterglows, and clouds floating gently by.

The walls integrate apertures from small holes children can crawl through to doorways with frames upholstered in Revive highlight colours. These curious features provide views beyond the walls, making the space feel larger while mimicking the sense of simplicity and permeability of traditional Chinese gardens.

Peng Wenhui: "The quality of the Kvadrat textiles stands out. The colours are refreshing, well-saturated and comfortable when you look at them. Kvadrat is always my first choice."

Bamboo is specified throughout the theatre stage to make the space more playful. It combines to timeless, elegant effect with the Revive textiles. Furthermore, as they are produced in China, they contribute towards lowering the project's overall carbon footprint.

Qiao Zhenyu: "I come from a painting background, the colours of Kvadrat really appeal to me and you can see Kvadrat textiles in almost all the studios I have designed.”
